Virtual Instrument Development
I started developing Virtual Instruments for Kontakt as a way of adding extra value to the remote recording sessions that clients booked me for. After completing a session, I would send a free sample library through with the final files.
During this period I also recorded some private custom sample libraries for different media composers.
Being a cellist, I specialised in creating Cello based sample libraries at this stage. As a media composer myself with Primetime TV credits I also have excellent insight into the needs of Virtual Instrument users.
After developing these first instruments between 2016 and 2020 I have gone on to live and breathe Kontakt, working on the instruments below. Initially with basic concepts and experimentation, and advancing to developing complex instruments for major developers to NKS specifications.
2025 Featured Projects
MIRRORS
Orchestral Tools × Slate + Ash
My major scripting project of 2025 was the development of MIRRORS, a groundbreaking collaboration between Orchestral Tools and Slate + Ash that blurs the boundaries between experimental analog synthesis and orchestral performance.
The library takes synthesised source material from Slate + Ash and reflects it through the prism of orchestral performance, with Hugh Brunt of the London Contemporary Orchestra orchestrating and conducting the recordings at Teldex Studios in Berlin, overseen by Yair Elazar Glotman. I was responsible for the development scripting that powers this unique instrument.
Choreographs Randomisation Engine
Slate + Ash
I scripted the powerful new randomisation engine for the Choreographs update. This free update transforms the instrument with intelligent randomisation controls that introduce variation to layer parameters such as envelope shape, pan, and sample start point, adding fluidity to abstract trigger sequences.
The update also expanded the sound library with new presets designed by artists including Clark, Rival Consoles, Nosaj Thing, and Nadia Struiwigh.
Dystropia
Heavyocity
I made scripting contributions to Heavyocity’s Dystropia, an evocative hybrid instrument that plunges composers into a post-apocalyptic landscape. Built from analog synths, organic sources, field recordings, and experimental processing, Dystropia transforms raw sound into emotion.
The library features over 380 presets ranging from eerie pads and fractured pulses to industrial remnants and signature alarms.
2024 NKS 2.0 Projects
8Dio Scoring Bundles
8Dio × Native Instruments
Working alongside Gabriel Dib, I updated 20 8Dio virtual instruments to the NKS 2.0 standard, enabling full integration with Native Instruments’ latest hardware controllers. These instruments were packaged and released as two comprehensive scoring bundles available exclusively through Native Instruments.
The project involved extensive scripting work to implement the new NKS 2.0 features including enhanced parameter mapping, improved preset browsing, and optimised performance controls.
Berlin Orchestra NKS 2.0
Orchestral Tools
I was commissioned to update Orchestral Tools’ flagship Berlin Orchestra library to the NKS 2.0 standard. This comprehensive orchestral collection is one of the most respected sample libraries in the industry, used by professional composers worldwide.
The NKS 2.0 update brings enhanced controller integration, improved workflow features, and seamless compatibility with Native Instruments’ mk3 keyboards.
Strikeforce & Strikeforce 2
Laboratory Audio
I implemented NKS 2.0 integration for Laboratory Audio’s Strikeforce and Strikeforce 2 cinematic percussion libraries. These powerful instruments deliver hard-hitting drums, impacts, and rhythmic elements designed for modern media composition.
The NKS 2.0 implementation provides full hardware controller support and enhanced browsing capabilities for these essential percussion tools.
Orchestral Tools & NKS 2.0
Time Macro & Time Micro
Orchestral Tools
Over Summer 2023 I became involved with the launch of the new NKS 2.0 standard from Native Instruments. I worked with an advance model of one of their new mk3 keyboards to develop virtual instruments for Orchestral Tools for the release of these new keyboards and the new NKS 2.0 standard.
The development I undertook for Orchestral Tools was to update the products Time Macro and Time Micro to the new NKS 2.0 standard to enable seamless integration with the mk3 keyboards.
In addition to this, I scripted a series of brand new instruments designed to be used with the new aftertouch capability of the NI mk3 keyboards. Rather than add this to the older instruments, these aftertouch instruments were completely built from scratch with freshly written code to take advantage of the latest Kontakt functionality.
In the video above, you can see an exploration of the patches from Reuben Cornell starting at 6:28
Strezov Sampling
The Creative ToolboX
Strezov Sampling
In 2022 and 2023 I have been scripting instruments and working on UI/UX for the well known and respected Kontakt developer Strezov Sampling.
The instruments that I have taken part in building with Strezov Sampling have all been built to the NKS standard and encoded by Native Instruments.
I have been working on The Creative ToolboX for Strezov Sampling which aims to provide some high quality songwriting and composition tools in a free Kontakt Player instrument. The first instruments released were Drums, Percussion and Drum Machines.
Steinway Grand Piano
Creative ToolboX Series
This Pristine Steinway Grand is another installment in the Creative ToolboX series that I had the honour of scripting for Strezov Sampling. Scripting a piano was a first for me. Perfecting the release triggering was a particular challenge which I managed to overcome.
It’s All Noise
Ultimate Cello Textures
Harmonics Pad
The most recent library that I have released is the first in my Ultimate Cello Series which plans to explore the cello in great depth.
This is the third library that I have scripted and delivered to NKS 2.0 specifications.
The Ultimate Cello series will be a modular library focusing on specific areas of the cello. The first Volume, coming soon, will explore Harmonics. This library is from a parallel series which I am calling “Textures” which takes source samples from the Ultimate Cello series and then uses them in unconventional ways to make contemporary sounds through Sound Design. In the case of “Ultimate Cello Textures – Harmonics Pad”, the instrument is a pad designer.
