Kid Criminals
Documentary Score
I composed the original score for this documentary series exploring cutting-edge rehabilitation methods used in a Louisiana juvenile detention facility. The series was produced by Plum Pictures for Channel 4 and directed by Matt Pelly, with whom I have collaborated on several documentary projects.
The Subject Matter
Kid Criminals follows the stories of young offenders who have committed serious crimes, and the prison staff attempting to help them find redemption. The documentary examines whether children who have done terrible things can truly change, and what methods might help them do so. It required a score that could navigate between moments of genuine hope and the weight of profound tragedy.
The Musical Approach
This was some of the most emotionally challenging material I have ever worked on. The score needed to honour the gravity of the subject matter without being exploitative or manipulative. I combined sparse electronic textures and ambient soundscapes with acoustic solo instruments to create space for the stories to breathe, while supporting the emotional journey of both the young inmates and the staff trying to help them. The electronic elements helped establish the institutional, almost clinical environment of the facility, while the acoustic passages brought humanity and emotional depth to the more intimate moments.
Reception
The documentary was well received by critics and audiences alike, currently holding an IMDB score of 7.9. The series sparked important conversations about juvenile justice reform and the possibility of rehabilitation for even the most troubled young offenders.
