The Complainers documentary

I composed the original music for this documentary series produced by Dragonfly TV for Channel 4. Dragonfly are the company behind award-winning programmes including ‘One Born Every Minute’ and ‘Kill it, Cook it, Eat it’. The series was directed by Matt Pelly.

The Concept

The Complainers follows a cast of characters who have elevated complaining to an art form. From serial letter-writers to professional grievance-hunters, the series explores the psychology and often absurdist comedy of people who simply cannot let things go. Each episode profiles individuals whose dedication to formal complaints borders on obsession.

The Musical Approach

The score needed to walk a careful line between highlighting the comedic absurdity of the situations while maintaining respect for the subjects. I created a palette that could pivot between playful, almost mischievous themes and more sympathetic moments that revealed the human stories behind the complaints. The music helps the audience laugh with these characters rather than at them, while also acknowledging the genuine frustrations that drive their behaviour.

Collaboration

This was one of several collaborations with director Matt Pelly, with whom I also worked on Kid Criminals. Working with Dragonfly TV was a fantastic experience. Their reputation for character-driven documentaries meant the music could really focus on supporting the emotional journeys of the people on screen.
